Overview of the rules of the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners

We reviewed the rules of the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

Scope of Practice

The Texas Chiropractic Act and the Texas rules regulate the scope of practice for chiropractors.

Informed Consent

The process of obtaining informed consent and educating patients is one of the best ways for chiropractors to protect themselves from malpractice claims. The general requirements for informed consent were discussed. We also reviewed the recent Texas Supreme Court decision requiring disclosure of the risk of cerebral vascular accidents.

Sexual Misconduct

The consequences of committing sexual misconduct are very severe. Chiropractors should communicate carefully with their patients and establish boundaries to reduce the risk of sexual misconduct complaints.

HIPAA/patient confidentiality

We briefly discussed the Texas rules that apply to patient confidentiality, including HB 300. We spent more time discussing HIPAA as it applies to chiropractic practices.
